Common questions

Employee benefits FAQ

What is an occupational pension?

It is a pension arranged through the workplace. Your company sets it up, employees can contribute from their pay, and the company can contribute too. We help you choose the right structure for the size of your business and explain it to your staff.

What is the difference between group life insurance and death in service?

They are usually the same thing. A group life policy pays a lump sum to an employee’s family if they die while employed by you, and this benefit is commonly known as death in service. It is often set as a multiple of salary, and the company arranges it for the whole team under one policy.

What does group income protection cover?

It pays a regular income to an employee who cannot work because of illness or injury, usually after a waiting period that matches your sick pay scheme. It is designed to bridge the gap, so your people are not left without income if they are off work for a long time.

Are employee benefits tax-efficient for the company?

Many are. Employer pension contributions, group life premiums and group income protection premiums can often be treated as a business expense, and are generally not taxed as a benefit-in-kind for employees when set up correctly. The detail depends on the benefit and Revenue limits, so we check this with you.

How is this different from a larger provider?

We are a smaller firm and we work personally with each client. We meet both employers and employees, talk through the options, and monitor progress over time, rather than setting a plan up and leaving you to manage it.

Is the first call free?

Yes. The first call is free and carries no obligation, and we explain our fees before you commit to anything.

Tax treatment and benefit levels depend on Revenue rules, the insurer and your circumstances, and can change. Pension values can go down as well as up. This page is general information and is not personal financial advice.
