The Big Opportunity: New €8,500 Scrappage Scheme

Starting this July, the government is launching a €10 million pilot scrappage scheme aimed at removing older, high-emission cars from the road.

  • Who Qualifies: Owners of petrol or diesel cars that are 13 years old or older.

  • The Financial Benefit: You can get a €5,000 grant for scrapping your old car, plus an additional €3,500 towards the purchase of a new EV, bringing the total potential subsidy to €8,500.

  • The Catch: It operates on a strict first-come, first-served basis. Because the total fund is capped at €10 million, it will likely run out quickly.

  • Location Advantage: If you live in a rural area, your chances are much higher. 65% of the fund is ring-fenced for rural areas due to a lack of public transport options. Only 35% (€3.5 million) is allocated to residents of Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick, and Waterford.

The Deadlines: Existing EV Grant Scheme Updates

If you are planning to buy a new EV without scrapping a 13-year-old car, the rules for the existing €3,500 grant are changing significantly.

  • Price Cap Dropping: From July 31st, the maximum vehicle price eligible for the €3,500 grant will drop from €60,000 to €50,000. The government is intentionally shifting support toward small and medium-sized vehicles rather than luxury models.

  • Fund Injection: Because EV sales are booming (up 50% compared to last year), the original budget was on track to run out next month. The State is injecting an extra €30 million from the Climate Action Fund to keep the €3,500 grant alive for now.

Financial Health Takeaway

If you currently drive a car from 2013 or earlier and have been considering an EV, July is your optimal financial window. Combining the scrappage bonus with the standard grant offers massive upfront savings. Furthermore, with petrol and diesel prices climbing and more affordable EV models entering the market, the long-term running costs of switching continue to fall. However, if you are looking at an EV priced between €50,000 and €60,000, you must lock in your purchase before the July 31st deadline to keep the €3,500 grant.
